What lies beneath

Detailed historic murals decorated the inside of St. Mary’s Basilica until the 1950s, when, for reasons unrecorded, they were painted over. Realizing now what they lost, church officials recently brought in art conservator Jennifer Fotheringham to restore the murals. Working with tools that include surgical scalpels, Fotheringham painstakingly removes the covering paint one fleck at a time. But that’s only part of the job; a bigger part is cleaning the original painting to remove a century of dirt, soot, and pollution. Recently, Halifax Magazine visited to document the work in progress.
