Steampunks, UFOs and yodellers—exploring Maritime subcultures

A new Halifax-based production company, Peep Media Inc., is premiering its first documentary Edge of East on CBC Documentary Channel tonight at 8pm. (It will rebroadcast on CBC Maritimes on July 19 at 8pm). In the doc, director Jackie Torrens explores three rich and surprising subcultures that have unique ties to the Maritime identity: the UFO believers of Shag Harbour, the Steampunks of Halifax and the Yodelers of King’s County. She explores what they can tell us about East Coast identity, and unexpected bonds between the groups. Peep Media Inc. is an  innovative production company headed by producer Jessica Brown, and writer/director/actor Jackie Torrens. “We are focused on intelligent television,” says a press release. “Intertwining Jessica Brown’s strong background in producing documentary, factual and scripted programming, along with Jackie Torrens’ award-winning story writing, acting and radio documentaries, Peep Media Inc. is an original company setting out on the film and television industry scene with the mission of producing both factual and dramatic content to the Canadian and International audiences.”
