Shack Attack

These unusually mild fall days have got me lingering outside and feeling inspired to soak up every last ray of sunshine. Surprising even myself, I managed a dip in the ocean a mere week ago…. So, in the hopes of continuing to chase an endless summer, I decided to check out the Halifax waterfront’s current culinary offerings.
Amidst all the fried food and tourist fare stands The Shack Oyster Bar, which offers only local and fresh seafood. The brainchild of Renee Lavallee, otherwise known as the feisty chef and co-creator TIBS dinners, The Shack is simple in theme but mighty in taste. The oysters available come from Black Point where Paul Budreski has been involved with shellfish aquaculture since 1977 and says “the shallow bays yield a higher percentage of sun-drenched nutrients.” Menu offerings include littleneck clams, mussels, bay scallops, chowders and more. Many items can be paired with creative sauces such as green curry or spicy garlic.
On an exceptionally warm October afternoon, we strolled along the waterfront and stopped at The Shack for lunch. I ordered the bay scallops with a limonata while my friend chose the lobster roll and littleneck clams. Lingering at a picnic table overlooking the calm water, we enjoyed our lighter fare. My scallops were delicious and nicely matched with salsa verde drizzled over top. Served with a homemade TIBS biscuit, my meal was light yet satisfying. My friend’s lobster roll was overflowing and smack-your-lips tasty. The clams were succulent and oh-so-much better than your typical fried-fast clams found elsewhere along the waterfront.
I was disappointed to learn that The Shack will be closing for the season very soon – weather depending. But if you find yourself yearning for one more little taste of summer on these beautiful sun-drenched days, I highly recommend stopping by The Shack for a delicious nibble before the season’s done…
