As outcry grows, developers from Cabot Cape Breton continue to tout their proposal to build a golf course on publicly owned and environmentally sensitive land in West Mabou Beach Provincial Park.

Former premier Rodney MacDonald presents the developers’ case to media.

“Twenty kilometres down the road in Inverness, Cabot has proven that a low-impact, traditional links course can protect and enhance the natural environment — including the dunes — with best-in-class sustainable management practices and environmental mitigations backed by science,” he says in the Reporter.

Many residents and opponents reject those claims, pointing out that Nova Scotia gave a definitive no the last time the developers made this pitch in 2018.

“We do need to look for opportunities for economic development in Cape Breton,” resident Jenn Power tells CBC. “However, we can’t look for those economic developments at all costs. When I think about West Mabou Beach, it isn’t a place crying out for economic development, it’s a place crying out for protection. It’s really disappointing for me to think that that could be sacrificed in the name of a few more tourist dollars.”

So far, more than 16,470 people have signed a petition opposing the proposal.

New Glasgow earns climate change award
New Glasgow has earned the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities’ 2022 Climate Change Leaders Award, feted for “exemplary leadership” in climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Mayor Nancy Dicks credits climate-change manager Rachel Mitchell for the recognition.

“Other municipalities are doing something, but what we understood is we needed a dedicated person to work on these opportunities,” she said. “She got us going. There were things being done slowly, but with Rachel we were able to move a lot of our work forward.”

Living the Canadian dream
Growing up in a small Chinese village, Alice Xu long dreamt of living in another country. After graduating high school, she headed to Canada to attend university.

Like most newcomers, she suffered from loneliness and culture shock. But with optimism and enthusiasm, she quickly adapted. Today she has many friends and is building a career. She hopes to have her parents join her here in a few years.

“Coming to Canada was good for me,” she says. “I have a happy life here, and I have made some very good friends. Things are really going well for me.”

She shares her story with Marianne Simon in the latest issue of Unravel Halifax.
