Raising the Barre

A cheeky fundraiser is hoping to raise the barre in Halifax. One hundred men will participate in the second annual event called Bare all for the Barre. They’ll endure a workout of a lifetime, flexing and pointing their way to a goal of raising $100,000 for prostate cancer. The 2014 event saw 15 men raise $7,000 in just three weeks.
The event has men baring all but don’t worry (or perhaps to your disappointment), their clothing stays on. Men don’t often talk about their health but will “bare all” by stepping out of their comfort zone to try a new fitness activity to raise money and awareness for a good cause. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men but if detected early enough, the survival rate can be over 90 per cent.
Barre is a fitness phenomenon that combines elements of ballet, yoga, Pilates and strength conditioning, all aspects of a dancer’s training, with no dance experience required.
“It started as a challenge for guys at the gym to try something new,” says Elana Liberman, owner of Cyclone Group Fitness. “One hundred men coming together in health and fitness, doing something unique to raise money for a good cause will be inspiring to our community.”
The event, organized by Cyclone Group Fitness, is a 45-minute all-levels, all-ages class and takes place on September 19 at the Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness month. Proceeds go to Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic Region.
