If you’ve flown out of Halifax lately, you’ve probably noticed the new Alt Hotel at the airport. Just metres from the terminal, it’s the first (and thus far, only) Atlantic Canadian location for the fast-growing Quebec chain. There are also Alts in Ontario and Manitoba.
Christiane Germain, co-president of Groupe Germain Hospitalité, feels that Halifax has a vibrancy that makes it the ideal beachhead for the chain’s expansion. “Halifax is a good market,” she says. “It’s the major city for Atlantic Canada, and it’s a beautiful, busy city. We have ambitions to bring Alt all across Canada, and Halifax is a big part of that.”
Germain believes that Alt’s “no-frills chic experience” makes it stand apart. “It’s a bit of an edge,” she says. “This concept was non-existent in Canada. We put a lot of emphasis on design.” The rooms are compact but functional and stylish, each decorated with original works of art. “We’re not worried about having huge rooms,” she says. “We focus on the essentials—things like the quality of the mattress, ensuring a quiet, restful visit.”
